Troubleshooting Can’t Determine Insteon Engine Error – 3 Fixes

Introduction

When you try to plug a new device into your Insteon hub, it should work fine. But sometimes there is an annoying message that reads Can’t Determine Insteon Engine. This is a very commonly faced issue amongst Insteon users.

But don’t you worry. We have an easy fix for you. You can solve this error just by following some simple steps and guidelines.

In this article, we’re going to explain the meaning behind the message, why it occurs, and how to fix it yourself. So, just keep on reading.

What Does “Can’t Determine Insteon Engine” Mean?

This message often occurs when you’re trying to integrate a new device into your hub. It shows up when your hub can’t read the device being connected.

The message initially means the device is not responding. You might think there’s something wrong with the device’s engine. But in reality, there’s a gap in the hub and the device’s communication.

When Does The Error Message Show up?

Let’s explain that with a simple example-

Suppose you want to add new Insteon LED bulbs to the hub. There’s a simple process.

You will go to the Insteon Hub app on your mobile device. Go to the “ADD DEVICE” screen.

There, you’ll find a list of most devices supported by the Insteon hub, pre-programmed for you. It can be a plug-in module, bulbs, Open/Close sensors, cameras, Leak sensors, or any other Insteon device.

From there on, click on the tile that matches the device you are trying to install. Then, press the set button on your device until the blinker comes on.

Once the hub finds your device, you can give it a name and customize other settings for it.

It’s usually a smooth process. But sometimes the hub shows an error message. If you are constantly getting the “Can’t Determine Engine” message, it means your hub can’t find the device.

More precisely, the hub cannot communicate with the device to finish the setup.

But, don’t worry. A lot of people face this problem and it’s an easy one to solve. Let’s look at the step-by-step bug fix for your Insteon.

3 Ways to Fix “Can’t Determine Engine” Error

Now, we’re going to take a few different approaches to troubleshoot the error. We implore you to try all of them until your problem is fixed.

Let’s get on with it.

Connection Troubleshoot

Sometimes the problem with your Insteon hub can just be a poor connection. Since this is a wired connection, check your ethernet cable.

If your router is functioning correctly, try connecting the hub again.

To avoid such issues with faulty routers, here are some suggestions.

So, grab either router and you won’t face this problem again.

The problem may also be with the device you are trying to add. So try moving the device to a different location to access a better connection.

Adding The Device Manually

If your connection is working properly but you still see the error message, it’s time for a different approach.

The Insteon app has a good number of devices listed for you. When that doesn’t work, you also have the option to add a device manually.

At the bottom of your app screen, locate the “add by ID” button. Tap the button and type in the ID of the device you are trying to add. Ideally, the ID number should be on the body of the device itself.

Once you are done putting in the ID, it’ll take a few minutes for the app to search up the device and add it. Then you can give it a name and change the settings.

This approach usually works better and makes adding devices much easier. Since you’re making the hub do the initial search, it has a better chance of communicating with the device. This will effectively solve the “can’t determine engine” error.

Communication Repair

If none of those methods have worked for you, it’s confirmed your Insteon can’t find the device at all. There is no communication happening between the hub and device. To fix that issue, you’ll need to repair the communication.

The trick to doing that is through the “link management” tab of your app.

Before that, try putting in the device ID manually first. When the action fails, and you get the error message, open up an event viewer.

Go to tools>diagnostics>event viewer

The event viewer is a gateway to understanding what exactly is happening between the two technologies.

You will see a series of codes that look like this:

INST-TX-1

INST-ACK

This means the hub is looking for a device but it can’t locate it. The hub would run this command three times. If it can’t get a signal from the device, it will show the can’t determine engine text.

The command that we are looking for is an INST-SRX. That means the device is being added.

Now, to fix that, you’ve to go to the link management tab, and click on  “start linking”. Once the process is underway, plug in your device and push down the set button.

You will see a “new Insteon device” dialogue pop up on your app screen. That means the device has essentially communicated with the hub.

Now, you just need to pull up the event viewer one more time, clear it, and set it to level 3.

Next thing you know, you will have the INST-SRX command on your screen. Congratulations! You have successfully fixed your Insteon’s can’t determine engine error.

If the error persists, try to see with a different device. If the hub detects other devices, then your particular device might be faulty.

But if your hub can’t detect any device at all, contact customer care as soon as possible.
